Day #1

Saratoga Springs/Lake George/Lake Placid

Our Adirondack Fall Foliage Adventure will begin in Saratoga Springs, NY in the morning (9 a.m. departure) on Sunday, 9/29/24 and return to this charming historic town on Thursday, 10/03/24.  For the duration of our trip, transportation will be provided on a chartered luxury motorcoach.

Our first stop will be picturesque Lake George as we embark on a one-hour, narrated, historic sightseeing cruise aboard The Horicon where we will discover the local history of the Revolutionary and French and Indian Wars while enjoying the magnificent color palette of the breathtaking fall foliage cradling this majestic lake.

Lunch will be enjoyed at the newly-renovated Lighthouse Grill overlooking Lake George following our cruise.

Following lunch, we will make our way through the Adirondack Mountains heading to Lake Placid for check-in at the Grand Adirondack Hotel which boasts a prime central position in this charismatic village.  From its rooftop bar, the Grand Adirondack Hotel offerss an amazing view of pristine Mirror Lake, Whiteface Mountain, and the quaint village of Lake Placid.  Cocktails on the roof (weather permitting) or at the Adirondack Great Room Bar will be followed by a special dinner prepared for us by our host hotel.

Day #2

Lake Placid/Saranac Lake

After breakfast at our host hotel, our motorcoach will head up the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway to the summit of a 4,867 foot mountain affording spectacular vistas spanning hundreds of miles, reaching as far as Vermont and Canada.

At the top of the summit, there's a castle built from native stone.  An elevator carved deep inside the mountain leads to patios which offer an amazing 360 degree view of Lake Placid and the surrounding area.

Departing Whiteface Summit our next stop will be High Falls Gorge where a private luncheon awaits us.  Immediately following the repast, we will take in the breathtaking Fall Foliage walk alongside the West Branch AuSable River and the High Falls Gorge with its four majestic waterfalls cascading over rocks and through deep crevices carved billions of years ago.  Located below the eastern base of Whiteface Mountain, the half-mile trail meanders along groomed paths through the forest and along sturdy walkways (suitable for the physically challenged) mounted to the rock walls of the gorge above the rushing waterfalls and rapidly descending river waters.  Various observation locations, see-through platforms, and steel bridges provide awe-inspiring views of nature’s ongoing work.  A quarter-mile round trip, wheelchair accessible path, brings guests of all ages to the center of the falls without stairs to witness what Native Americans named “The Ancient Valley of Foaming Water”.

After our pleasant outdoor stroll, a short drive will take us to the Cloudsplitter Gondola at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center (as available).  The 15-minute ride up to the peak of Little Whiteface Mountain will showcase the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid, Lake Champlain and some of the most massive peaks in all of New York State.

Upon our return to our hotel in Lake Placid, you will have the opportunity to wander around this picturesque village with its lovely view of Mirror Lake (with places to sit and enjoy a coffee, ice cream or popcorn) and patronize the delightful shops along charming Main Street.

Dinner this evening will be at the popular, Adirondack-inspired Red Fox Restaurant in nearby Saranac Lake.  A special menu has been designed for our group.

be headed to the Olympic Legacy Sites where we have arranged for a private guided tour to view the Olympic Museum Exhibit Gallery of Lake Placid's two historic Winter Olympics (1932 and 1980).

Our Fall Foliage expedition then proceeds to Mount Van Hoevenberg (MVH) - site of the 1932 bobsled and the 1980 bobsled, cross-country ski, and biathlon competitions.  Our personal tour guide will introduce us to the facilities at MVH including the world-class, state-of-the-art combined bobsled-skeleton sliding track used for World Championships and various International competitions.  Our tour will include the new Mountain Pass Lodge which has the only indoor, push-start training facility of bobsled and skeleton in the United States.  MVH also has 55 kilometers (34 miles) of cross-country ski and biathalon trails used in the 1980 Olympics and numerous National and International competitions.

We continue to the Olympic Jumping Complex at Intervale, home of the 1932 and 1980 Ski Jump competitions.  Our guide will show us this stunning facility including the brand new Skyride, an eight-passenger gondola ride to transport us up to the base of the two impressive Ski Jumping Towers.  On the larger 120-meter Ski Jump Tower, the scenic glass-enclosed elevator ride up gives a stunning bird’s-eye view of the Adirondacks in all their fall glory.  The Tower’s Sky Deck observation level offers 360-degree panoramic views of the Lake Placid region - the kind that would usually require an hours-long hike up a mountain - all accessible in just a 30-second elevator ride.

Day #3

The Wild Center/Tupper Lake

No trip to Upstate New York would be complete without a visit to The Wild Center whose mission is "to ignite an enduring passion for the Adirondacks where people and nature can thrive together and offer an example for the world."

Nestled within the Adirondack Mountains about 21 miles southwest of Saranac Lake, The Wild Center features acres of forest and a plethora of wildlife.  Known as the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, the center is science-based, and its experiences, exhibits and programs are designed to open new ways to look into our relationship with nature.  The 115-acres include a stunning Wild Walk (a trail across tree tops via a wide, secure wooden walkway designed to mimic a spider's web and bald eagle's nest).  The Museum features wildlife, videos, and displays which focus on the natural history of the region, including the geology and ecology of the Adirondack Park.  We will have a private tour guide to take us around the indoor and outdoor attractions.

Whether young or old, this is a place to be experienced!

Our day will conclude with dinner will be at one of our favorite area restaurants, The Red Fox - a top dining establishment located in nearby Saranac Lake.

Day #4

Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain/Saratoga Springs

Following breakfast and check-out at our host hotel, our route will take us back to Saratoga Springs.  Mark and I will be headed to the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway in Wilmington, NY (en route between Lake Placid and Saratoga Springs) which is an outstanding  driving experience.  This road leads you directly to the summit of the mountain, with gorgeous views spanning hundreds of miles of wilderness reaching as far as Vermont (and Canada?).  Nowhere else is the beauty and vastness of the Adirondack Park as its High Peaks so apparent and so easily accessible.

First opened in 1936 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the paved road to the summit rises over 2,300 feet in five miles from the Toll House entrance.  Wildflowers, indigenous to the mountain terrain, grow roadside, serving as a living museum of forest ecology - all of which is built over the one billion year-old Anorthosite bedrock boulders.  Along the way up are nine designated spots where you are encouraged to stop, enjoy the views, take a few photos, and discover more about the mountain  surroundings from the posted information signs.

At the summit, there are a few things you don't often find atop a peak:  a castle built from native stone, a restaurant and gift shop, an elevator carved deep inside the mountain top itself, and a truly spectacular 360-degree, panoramic view of unparalleled captivation that is the Adirondack Park.

The price of this optional drive up the mountain runs $20 for the vehicle and driver, $20 for each additional passenger and is NOT included in the cost of the tour.  You pay at the Toll Booth entrance.

We will also be stopping for lunch somewhere en route.  Again, NOT included in the cost of the tour as the restaurants we queried were unsure whether they would remain open at this time due to staffing challenges.

While you are indeed invited to do so, there is no obligation to join us on our homeward leg of the trip.  You are welcome to further explore the town of Lake Placid on your own following check-out of the hotel, if you wish, or head directly back to Saratoga Springs.  Mark will prepare directions for the entire program, including the ride back.

WE HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US!
